Gorilla Glue #4 Strain Review: Effects & Grow Tips | Royal King Seeds

Gorilla Glue #4 β now officially called GG4 after trademark pressure from the actual Gorilla Glue adhesive company β earned its name the way the best strains do: from something that actually happens. The resin production on GG4 is so prolific that scissors become coated with a sticky, nearly adhesive layer of trichome material when trimming. In our own grows, we have to clean trim tools every 15β20 minutes. That level of resin output is the strain's defining characteristic and the source of its 24β29% THC testing.
GG4 was an accident. Joesy Whales and Lone Watty created it unintentionally from a hermaphroditic Chem's Sister pollinating a Sour Dubb plant, with Chocolate Diesel somewhere in the mix. The result was a plant so covered in resin it became immediately coveted, won multiple Cannabis Cups, and became one of the most widely grown strains in the US. The high THC, unique sour-diesel terpene profile, and exceptional resin production make it one of the few strains that lives up to its competition-winning reputation in actual cultivation.

Genetics and Lineage
GG4's origin is genuinely accidental. Joesy Whales was growing Chem's Sister and Sour Dubb together when a hermaphroditic Chem's Sister plant pollinated the Sour Dubb crop. Chocolate Diesel was also in the grow. The resulting seed β grown out and selected β became Gorilla Glue #4. The #4 designation comes from the selection process: four phenotypes were grown, and #4 was identified as the superior expression.
The Chemdawg lineage from the Chem's Sister parent contributes the diesel-sour terpene base and the cerebral intensity. The Sour Dubb parent adds another layer of sour diesel complexity and the indica body component. Chocolate Diesel provides additional resin production and the faint chocolate-coffee note present in the more complex GG4 phenotypes.
The combination creates one of the highest resin-producing plants in the cannabis catalog β the "glue" characteristic is not marketing. In our trims, a single pass over mature GG4 flower with scissors requires cleaning before you can cut again. For growers interested in extraction β hash, rosin, live resin β GG4 is the yield-per-gram-of-starting-material leader in our entire catalog.
Terpene Profile and Flavor
GG4's terpene profile is distinctly in the Chem/diesel family: sharp, sour, and earthy with a pine backbone. It is the opposite of the dessert profiles that dominate the modern market β raw, chemical-adjacent, loud. Well-grown GG4 has an aroma that is aggressive and immediately recognizable.
Beta-caryophyllene dominates, providing peppery depth and the anti-inflammatory character associated with that terpene. Myrcene adds the earthy base and contributes to the heavy body effect. Limonene drives the sour brightness β the citrus-chemical quality that defines the diesel category. Alpha-pinene adds the sharp pine note and provides cognitive counterbalancing to the potent THC load.
On consumption: sour and diesel on inhale, earthy-chocolate on exhale. The flavor is complex and not sweet β this is a strain for consumers who like the raw, chemical character of Chemdawg-lineage genetics rather than the dessert-forward profiles of the cookie family.
Growing Guide
GG4 is one of the most rewarding intermediate grows in our catalog. The high resin production that makes it valuable also creates some specific grow challenges that distinguish it from lower-resin strains.
From Our Grows: GG4 is a heavy feeder. We run it at EC 1.8β2.0 at peak bloom in coco β higher than most strains we run β and it absorbs nutrients aggressively without showing the lockout symptoms that other strains would display at those levels. pH at 5.9β6.1. The plant stretches significantly during the first 2β3 weeks of flower β we flip at 45cm and see it finish at 100β130cm without training. Top early (node 4β5) and LST aggressively to control height and develop multiple equal colas.
Resin management during grow: The trichome production creates a unique challenge β any physical contact with the plant in late flower deposits a visible layer of resin on hands, tools, and equipment. Work with gloves in the final 3 weeks. The resin also makes leaves sticky and can impede airflow through the canopy, increasing botrytis risk. Lollipopping the lower third of the plant at week 1 of flower significantly improves airflow.
Harvest: GG4 finishes at 56β63 days. The trichome maturation is distinctive β the amber transition is faster than some strains once it begins. Monitor from day 54 onward. The resin production peaks in the final 7β10 days β a compelling reason not to harvest early. For high-resin feminized genetics including GG4 lines, our catalog includes extraction-optimized selections.
Post-harvest: GG4 is exceptional for rosin pressing. The high trichome density produces significantly higher yields per gram of starting material than lower-resin strains. If extraction is a goal, let the buds cure in their bags for 24β48 hours before pressing to optimize yield.
Effect Profile
GG4 is a floor-locking strain at higher doses, but the effect onset is not purely indica β there is a cerebral intensity from the Chemdawg heritage that hits before the body component takes over. The effect sequence: initial mental euphoria (5β15 minutes), then progressive body heaviness that builds over the following 30β45 minutes until full-body sedation dominates. At the 24β29% THC range, this is not a strain for inexperienced consumers or those sensitive to potency.
Duration is 2β4 hours. The intense, sedating body effect makes GG4 one of the better options for pain management, insomnia, and muscle relaxation. Not suitable for daytime use for most consumers β the functional window before sedation takes over is narrow.
GG4 vs Similar Genetics
| Strain | THC | Resin | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| GG4 | 24β29% | Exceptional | The standard β diesel-sour terpenes, best extraction yield |
| Chemdawg | 18β24% | High | Parent β lower THC ceiling, more classic diesel profile |
| OG Kush | 20β26% | High | Related lineage β pine-lemon vs sour-diesel, more grow difficulty |
| GSC | 22β28% | High | Similar THC, sweet terpenes instead of diesel |
| Wedding Cake | 23β27% | High | Dessert terpenes, similar potency, more beginner-friendly |
Who Should Grow GG4 / Who Should Skip It
Grow it if: You have at least one successful grow completed. You want the highest resin production available for extraction. You want 24β29% THC with documented consistency. You appreciate diesel and sour terpene profiles. You have good airflow in your grow space and an IPM program in place.
Skip it if: You are a first-time grower β the stretch management and resin handling create complications beginners do not need. You prefer sweet or fruity terpene profiles. You are in a humid environment β the massive trichome load creates unusual airflow restrictions in the canopy. You want primarily daytime use effects.
