Granddaddy Purple Seeds: The Complete Buying & Growing Guide for US Growers | Royal King Seeds

Granddaddy Purple (GDP) is one of the three or four cannabis strains that defined American indica during the post-2003 era. It is one of the first strains many growers learn by name, and one of the strains we get asked about more than any other on our US support channel. This is the long-form guide β lineage, terpene profile, real grow numbers, indoor and outdoor cultivation, and the question of whether you should grow GDP or something newer that descends from it.
Granddaddy Purple Lineage and Origin
Granddaddy Purple was released in 2003 in the San Francisco Bay Area by Ken Estes, a longtime Bay Area cultivator. The cross is Mendo Purps Γ Skunk Γ Afghani. Each parent contributes something specific: Mendo Purps brings the deep purple coloration and grape note, Skunk supplies vigor and yield, and Afghani anchors the heavy indica body effect. That combination of color, terpene, and effect is what made GDP a household name within two years of release.
Almost every "purple" indica on the modern US market traces back to either GDP directly or one of its parents. Strains like Purple Punch, Grape Ape (parallel lineage), and several modern Cake crosses owe their purple expression to the same Mendo Purps line that runs through GDP.
Terpene Profile and Effects
GDP is a textbook myrcene-dominant indica. The full terpene profile reads:
- Myrcene (~0.5-0.8% of total terpenes) β the dominant note, drives the sedating body effect
- Caryophyllene (~0.2-0.4%) β peppery undertone, contributes to relaxation
- Pinene (~0.1-0.2%) β small amount of pine sharpness on the back end
- Linalool β present in trace amounts, adds the lavender-floral note that some phenos display strongly
The aromatic profile is grape, berry, sweet wine, with an earthy backbone. Effect: deep body relaxation, comfortable sedation, useful for sleep support, muscle tension, and end-of-day unwind. THC tests typically 17-23%, CBD trace. Not a daytime functional strain β GDP is best paired with the couch.
Growing Granddaddy Purple at Home
GDP is medium-difficulty to grow. The plant has good vigor, predictable flowering, and rewards a real veg-to-flower schedule. Specifics:
- Flowering time: 8-9 weeks indoors photoperiod feminized
- Height: 3-4 feet indoors with proper veg, 5-7 feet outdoors
- Yield indoors: 4-6 oz per plant under 600W LED with 4-5 weeks veg
- Yield outdoors: 12-18 oz per plant in full sun, finished by early-mid October
- Climate fit: Mediterranean / Pacific / Mountain West β needs a real fall to develop full purple expression
- Difficulty: Moderate β slight susceptibility to powdery mildew in humid climates
The purple coloration is partly genetic and partly environmental. To pull the deepest purple, drop nighttime temperatures in the final 2 weeks of flower to 60-65Β°F. The cooler temps express anthocyanins (the same pigments responsible for red wine, red cabbage, and autumn leaves). Without the temperature drop, GDP often finishes mostly green with only hints of purple.
Indoor vs. Outdoor GDP β Which Performs Better
Both work, with different tradeoffs:
Indoor GDP rewards a 4-week veg, SCROG net at the start of flower, and a cool finish. Trichome production is dense, the purple develops well under controlled cool flowering temps, and the grow is more predictable. This is the path most US home growers take.
Outdoor GDP shines in California's Emerald Triangle, Oregon's Willamette Valley, Colorado's Front Range, and parts of the Pacific Northwest. The natural fall temperature drop hits at exactly the right moment for color expression. Outdoor GDP can produce dramatically deeper purple than indoor when the season cooperates, and the yields per plant are larger. The downside is one bad October weather window can ruin a season.
Harvest Window and Cure
GDP reaches peak when 75-80% of trichomes have gone milky-white with the remaining 20-25% turning amber. Harvest early on this curve and you trade some of the sedating effect for slightly more cerebral feel. Harvest late and you push hard toward couch-lock. Most experienced GDP growers cut at the early-amber inflection point.
Cure for at least 3 weeks in glass jars at 60-62% RH. The full terpene expression develops only with patience β the wine-grape note that defines GDP is volatile and only stabilizes after several weeks. Burping daily for week one, every 2-3 days for week two, and weekly after that.
Strains That Compare to Granddaddy Purple
If GDP genetics are not currently in stock, or if you want a similar effect with slightly different character, the closest matches are:
- Purple Kush β heavier indica, less wine-grape note, similar sedation
- Grape Ape β parallel lineage, brighter grape flavor, similar effect
- Bubba Kush β different terpene profile but similar body load
- Northern Lights β classic indica baseline, less color, faster flowering
- Purple Punch β modern hybrid that descends from GDP via Larry OG

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the THC percentage of Granddaddy Purple?
- 17-23% in most modern phenos, with a small number of selections testing 24-25%. Older cuts often tested 14-18%, the bump in recent years reflects breeder selection for THC dominance.
- How long does Granddaddy Purple take to flower?
- 8-9 weeks indoors photoperiod feminized. Outdoor harvest is typically early-mid October across most US growing regions.
- Is GDP a good beginner strain?
- Moderate difficulty rather than beginner. The plant is vigorous and predictable, but the purple expression depends on environmental control and slight powdery-mildew susceptibility in humid climates means it rewards growers with at least one cycle under their belt.
- What does Granddaddy Purple smell and taste like?
- Grape, berry, sweet wine, with an earthy backbone and slight floral note. The wine-grape character is the most distinctive marker β most GDP buyers can identify the strain by smell alone after the first encounter.
