Female Plant

Female cannabis plants are the entire commercial focus of the cannabis industry — only females produce the trichome-coated flowers (buds) that contain the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids consumed for medicinal and recreational purposes. Female morphology: shorter and bushier than male plants, with denser internodal spacing; calyx-and-pistil flower structures emerging at internodes during pre-flower (week 4-6 of vegetative); flower clusters that grow into dense colas during the flowering stage; trichome-coated bud surfaces that develop the characteristic resin and aroma; harvest-ready flowers contain 10-30% THC by dry weight depending on genetics and cultivation skill. The female reproductive structure: each flower is composed of a calyx (the protective base structure containing the ovule), two pistils (white hair-like stigmas that catch pollen), surrounding sugar leaves coated in trichomes, and the outer leaf material (fan leaves and small fan leaves). Unfertilized female flowers (called "sinsemilla" — Spanish for "without seed") continue producing pistils and trichomes throughout flowering, packing energy into resin production rather than seed development. Pollinated female flowers redirect energy into seed production within the calyx, dramatically reducing trichome and cannabinoid output — which is why male plants must be eliminated from flower-only crops. Female plants can be cloned vegetatively, with cuttings rooting and growing into genetically identical plants — this is the foundation of clone-based commercial cultivation and the preservation of elite cuts (Forum Cookies, Bubba Kush, OG Kush "Original" cut, etc.). Female cannabis is also responsible for the entire breeding cycle: only females produce seeds when pollinated by males, and only feminized females (chemically reversed to produce XX pollen) can produce all-female feminized seed lines.
