Trichome

Trichomes are the most important biological structure on a cannabis plant — these microscopic glands are the exclusive site of cannabinoid biosynthesis, producing every milligram of THC, CBD, CBG, and other phytocannabinoids along with the terpenes and flavonoids that define each strain's aroma and effect. Cannabis produces three types of trichomes: (1) Bulbous trichomes — smallest (15-30 microns), distributed across the entire plant surface, minor cannabinoid contribution; (2) Capitate sessile trichomes — larger (25-100 microns), embedded in leaf surfaces without stalks, moderate cannabinoid concentration; (3) Capitate stalked trichomes — largest and most important (50-500 microns), mushroom-shaped structures with a stalk topped by a bulbous resin head, concentrated heavily on calyxes and sugar leaves of mature flowers. The bulbous head contains the secretory cells where cannabinoid biosynthesis occurs, with mature heads filled with golden viscous resin containing 30-90% cannabinoid mass by weight. Trichome maturation is the single most reliable harvest-timing indicator, observed under 30-100x magnification using a jeweler's loupe, USB microscope, or smartphone clip-on lens. The progression: Clear/transparent trichomes — immature, low THC, harvest premature; Cloudy/milky-white trichomes — peak THC concentration, optimal harvest for energetic head-high effects; Amber/golden trichomes — THC degrading to CBN, producing more sedating couch-lock effects, optimal for nighttime/sleep strains. Most growers harvest at 60-80% cloudy + 10-20% amber trichomes for balanced effects. Trichomes are also the entire focus of the concentrate industry — solventless extraction (rosin, hash) and solvent-based extraction (BHO, CO2 oil, distillate) all aim to separate trichome resin from plant matter for purified cannabinoid products.
