Feminized Seeds

Feminized seed technology was pioneered in the late 1990s and revolutionized cannabis cultivation by removing the need to identify and cull male plants — historically a 50% loss of grow space when planting regular seeds. The process works by chemically reversing the sex of a female plant: applying colloidal silver or silver thiosulfate (STS) to a flowering female suppresses ethylene production and forces it to develop male pollen sacs containing only X chromosomes. When this XX-only pollen fertilizes another female plant, the resulting seeds carry two X chromosomes and develop as female 99%+ of the time. Feminized seeds are now the industry standard for both home and commercial growers because: (1) every seed planted produces flower-bearing female plants, doubling effective yield per square foot; (2) no plant inspection or sex identification is required; (3) grow rooms can be planned to exact plant counts without overseeding to compensate for males. The remaining 0.5-1% risk involves intersex (hermaphrodite) traits if plants are stressed during flowering — heat spikes above 85°F, light leaks, nutrient deficiency, or late harvest can trigger banana-shaped pollen sacs that self-pollinate the crop. Feminized seeds cannot be used for breeding new strains because they lack the male pollen genetics needed for traditional crosses; serious breeders work with regular seeds.
