Calyx

The calyx is botanically the most important structure on a cannabis plant — it is the female reproductive chamber that, when pollinated, develops into a seed pod, and when left unpollinated, continues to swell and produce trichomes throughout the flowering cycle. Each calyx is a teardrop or droplet-shaped structure approximately 3-7mm long when mature, with two white pistils (stigmas) emerging from the tip to catch pollen. The calyx surface is the densest trichome production zone on the entire plant — under microscopy, mature calyxes display thousands of stalked capitate trichomes per square millimeter, far exceeding the density on sugar leaves or fan leaves. This is why calyx-rich buds command premium prices and why the "calyx-to-leaf ratio" is a critical quality metric in commercial cannabis evaluation: high-quality cannabis is mostly calyxes and trichomes with minimal leaf material, while low-quality cannabis shows more visible leaf and less calyx development. Calyx swelling is the most reliable indicator of harvest timing — as flowering progresses, calyxes swell from initial 2-3mm formations to mature 5-7mm structures, eventually appearing to "stack" on top of each other as the bud densifies. When calyxes stop swelling for 3-5 consecutive days and begin showing slight purple or brown coloration at the base, harvest window is open. Important terminology distinction: in modern botanical terms, the cannabis "calyx" is technically a "bract" (a modified leaf protecting the flower), but the term "calyx" remains universal in cannabis cultivation literature. Pollinated calyxes develop visible swelling at the base where the seed forms, while sinsemilla calyxes remain hollow and continue producing resin.
