Clones are the foundation of consistent commercial cannabis production, allowing growers to perpetually reproduce a specific elite phenotype across thousands of plants. The principle: cannabis is a vegetatively propagable plant — cuttings from a mature plant will develop their own root systems and grow into independent plants while maintaining 100% genetic identity to the parent. This is critical because cannabis is highly heterozygous, meaning seeds from a single strain produce variable phenotypes; clones eliminate this variation by reproducing one specific phenotype indefinitely. Cloning protocol: (1) Select a healthy vegetative mother plant kept under continuous 18/6 light to prevent flowering; (2) Take cuttings from healthy branches, 4-6 inches long with 2-3 nodes; (3) Cut at a 45-degree angle just below a node using clean sterile scissors or razor; (4) Remove lower leaves to prevent moisture loss; (5) Dip cut end in cloning gel or rooting hormone (Clonex, Clone-X); (6) Insert into rooting medium (rockwool, peat plug, coco, aero cloner with constant misting); (7) Maintain high humidity (90-100% RH) with humidity dome and 24-hour weak fluorescent lighting; (8) Keep temperature 72-78°F, mist daily, no nutrients during rooting; (9) Roots emerge within 7-14 days; (10) Transplant rooted clones to vegetative growing medium. Famous "clone-only" cultivars: Forum Cookies (the original Girl Scout Cookies cut never released as feminized seed), Bubba Kush "Pre-98" cut, OG Kush "Original" cut, Blue Dream "Santa Cruz" cut, Sour Diesel "ECSD" cut. These elite phenotypes were never available as seeds and exist only in clone form, traded informally and commanding premium prices in legal markets. Clone limitations: clones cannot be made from autoflowers (autoflower clones inherit parent's biological age and would flower immediately), clones can carry parent diseases (powdery mildew, hop latent viroid HLVd, spider mites), clone genetics gradually degrade over many generations of cloning (genetic drift can produce phenotype changes after 5-10 years of continuous cloning a single mother). Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd) is a major commercial concern — this systemic viroid infects clone populations and reduces yield 30-50% with no visible symptoms, requiring lab testing for detection.
