Male Plant

Male cannabis plants are the unsung half of the species, providing the genetic contribution that makes new strain breeding possible. Males produce pollen sacs (called "anthers" within "staminate flowers") instead of the resinous calyx-and-pistil flowers that develop on females. The pollen sacs hang in clusters from the internodes — round green structures resembling tiny grapes that mature, split open, and release fine yellow pollen on the air. A single male plant can produce billions of pollen grains capable of pollinating females in a 1+ mile radius outdoors. Male morphology differences from females: typically taller and lankier than females, with longer internodal spacing; sex pre-flowers appear 1-2 weeks earlier than female pre-flowers (around week 4 of vegetative); pollen sacs are clearly identifiable at the internodes versus the teardrop calyxes of females. Males produce minimal cannabinoids — pollen sacs and male leaves contain very low THC and CBD compared to female flowers, making them useless for smoking. However, breeding programs depend entirely on males: only males produce the pollen needed to create new crosses, and skilled breeders maintain pollen libraries by collecting and freezing pollen from elite males to use in future projects. Male plant uses: (1) Breeding — selecting stud males with desirable terpene profiles, vigor, and disease resistance to cross with elite females; (2) Pollen production for seed crops; (3) Hash and concentrates — pollen sacs and small leaf material can be processed for low-grade hash; (4) Hemp/fiber cultivation — males grow taller faster than females and are harvested early for stalk fiber. Indoor flower-only growers must identify and remove males as soon as sex is determined to prevent accidental crop pollination.
