CBD
Also known as: Cannabidiol
Definition
CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, valued for anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and anti-seizure effects. Unlike THC, CBD does not bind directly to CB1 receptors and does not produce intoxication. CBD-dominant cannabis strains contain 5-20% CBD with under 1% THC.
Full Explanation
CBD (cannabidiol) is the second-most studied cannabinoid after THC and the foundation of the legal hemp industry. Discovered by Roger Adams in 1940, CBD's structure was determined by Raphael Mechoulam in 1963 — one year before he isolated THC. Unlike THC, CBD has very low affinity for CB1 receptors and produces no intoxication or "high." Instead, CBD acts through multiple complex pathways: it modulates the endocannabinoid system by inhibiting the FAAH enzyme that breaks down anandamide (the body's natural euphoric neurotransmitter); it activates the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor (anti-anxiety effects); it activates the TRPV1 pain receptor (analgesic effects); and it modulates GABA-A receptors (anti-seizure effects). Documented therapeutic uses: pediatric epilepsy (Epidiolex, FDA-approved 2018 for Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome), anxiety disorders, inflammation and arthritis pain, sleep difficulties, opioid withdrawal support, and PTSD. CBD and THC interact synergistically through the "entourage effect" — CBD partially blocks THC binding at CB1 receptors, reducing THC's anxiety-producing side effects while preserving therapeutic benefits. This is why 1:1 CBD:THC strains (like Cannatonic, Harlequin, ACDC) produce gentler, more functional effects than pure THC dominance. CBD-dominant cannabis strains contain 5-20% CBD with under 1% THC, including: ACDC (16-24% CBD), Charlotte's Web (17% CBD), Harle-Tsu (22% CBD), Suzy Q (10% CBD). CBD products dominate the legal hemp market: oils, tinctures, gummies, topicals, and isolate powders are widely available without prescription in the US under the 2018 Farm Bill (hemp under 0.3% THC by dry weight is federally legal). CBD has minimal known side effects and no addiction potential per WHO assessment.
