BHO (Butane Hash Oil)

BHO (butane hash oil) is one of the most popular and economically significant cannabis concentrate categories, with the global BHO market exceeding $5 billion as of 2024. The extraction process: cannabis flower (or trim) is packed into a stainless steel column; liquid butane is forced through the column, dissolving cannabinoids, terpenes, fats, and waxes from plant material; the resulting butane-cannabinoid mixture flows out the bottom into a collection vessel; butane is removed through vacuum purging at controlled temperatures (95-110°F) over 24-72 hours, leaving cannabinoids and terpenes behind. Modern BHO production uses closed-loop extraction systems that recycle butane safely with zero atmospheric release; older "open blasting" methods (using turkey baster columns and open-air evaporation) are extremely dangerous, having caused thousands of explosions and burns historically. BHO product types vary based on starting material and post-extraction processing: shatter — clear glass-like consistency from gentle low-temperature processing; wax — opaque crystalline texture from agitation during purging; badder/budder — whipped creamy consistency from extended agitation; crumble — dry crumbly consistency from low-temperature extended purging; sauce — liquid terpene-rich extract with crystalline THCA diamonds; live resin — extracted from frozen fresh cannabis preserving full terpene profile. BHO concentrate THC concentrations range from 60-95% depending on starting material quality and extraction parameters. Quality indicators: clean amber-to-gold color (dark brown indicates contamination or low-quality starting material), clean cannabis-terpene aroma without solvent smell, no residual butane (legal limits are 800 ppm or below in most US states), and stable consistency at room temperature. Consumption: BHO is consumed primarily through dabbing — heating concentrate on a hot quartz banger and inhaling the vapor through a water rig. BHO can also be added to flower joints (sprinkled inside or applied to the outside) for "augmented" smokes, or used in vape cartridges after further refinement.
