Cola

A cola (Spanish for "tail") is a dense cluster of cannabis flowers (calyxes) packed tightly together along the upper portion of each stem during flowering. The term originated in Mexico and was adopted globally in the 1970s alongside the rise of Mexican landrace strains in American cultivation. Each branch tip naturally develops one cola, with the main stem developing the largest "apical cola" or "top cola" due to apical dominance — the plant's natural tendency to direct most energy to the highest growing point. In an untrained plant, the apical cola dominates dramatically, often producing 30-50% of the plant's total flower mass while side-branch colas produce smaller and looser flowers. Training techniques exist specifically to multiply and equalize colas: topping creates 2 main colas, mainlining creates 8-32 equal colas, SCROG enforces dozens of equal colas across a flat canopy. Cola density and structure varies by strain and environment: indica-dominant strains produce dense rock-hard colas with tightly packed calyxes; sativa-dominant strains produce longer airier colas with more visible structure; hybrid colas fall between these extremes. Premium cannabis is judged largely on cola appearance: dense compact structure (no airy "popcorn" buds), generous trichome coverage (frosty white/silver appearance), vivid pistil display (orange, purple, or red), distinct color expression (deep greens, purples, or yellow streaks). Cola weights vary widely: small autoflower colas might be 2-5g dried; massive photoperiod top colas can exceed 100g+ dried. The single largest individual cola ever recorded was reportedly over 1 pound (450g) from a heavily trained outdoor plant. Lower colas often form smaller "popcorn" buds that are typically removed during lollipopping or used for concentrates production.
