Lollipopping

Lollipopping is a foundational technique in commercial cannabis cultivation, named for the resulting plant shape: a bare lower stem (the lollipop "stick") topped by a dense flowering canopy (the "candy"). The principle is energy economics — under indoor lighting and even outdoor sun, the lower 1/3 of a cannabis plant receives so little light that any bud sites in that zone produce only "larf" — small, airy, low-quality buds that take energy away from the productive upper canopy. By removing this lower growth entirely, the plant redirects all photosynthetic resources into the top 2/3 where light intensity is highest. Standard lollipopping protocol: 1-3 days before flipping to 12/12 flowering, identify the bottom 1/3 of the plant (the zone receiving less than 50% of canopy light intensity) and remove all branches, fan leaves, and bud sites in that zone using clean sharp scissors. The resulting plant has a clean bare stem from soil to mid-plant, then a dense bushy canopy above. Some growers also lollipop at day 21 of flowering as a finishing pass to remove any remaining low growth that won't finish into quality flower. Benefits: (1) Improved airflow at the canopy base prevents bud rot and powdery mildew, (2) Larger top colas as energy concentrates upward, (3) Easier harvest and trim since there's no scattered lower growth to process, (4) Better light penetration to mid-canopy bud sites. Lollipopping is essential for SOG, SCROG, and high-density commercial operations; less critical for small-plant home growers with one or two plants.
