Mainlining

Mainlining (also called manifolding) is the most precision-engineered training technique in cannabis cultivation, popularized by the grower "Nugbuckets" in the early 2010s. The technique creates a perfectly symmetrical plant where every cola receives identical light exposure and grows to identical size. The protocol begins early in vegetative growth: at the 5th-6th node, top the plant cleanly between the 3rd node, leaving exactly two equal side branches; tie these two branches outward at 90-degree angles to form the "manifold" — a Y-shaped main structure. As the two branches grow, top each one again between their 3rd-4th nodes, creating 4 equal main colas. Continue this binary multiplication: 4 colas can be topped to 8, then 16, then 32. Each new round is performed only after the previous level has fully recovered (7-14 days) and produced equal growth. The result after 6-10 weeks of veg is a perfectly symmetrical bowl-shaped plant with all colas at identical height and equal vigor. When flipped to flowering, every cola produces a similarly sized main bud — eliminating the larf-and-popcorn problem of untrained plants where one dominant cola hogs energy and lower bud sites underperform. Mainlining is the ideal training method for SCROG (the screen needs uniform input) and for commercial photography (plants look textbook-perfect). Trade-offs: requires 6-10 weeks of vegetative time (too long for autoflowers), demanding precision in cuts and timing, and results in a single plant filling a large canopy — best for jurisdictions with low plant-count limits.
