Hash

Hashish (hash) is the world's oldest cannabis concentrate, with documented production traditions in India, Afghanistan, Morocco, and Lebanon dating back over 1000 years. The basic principle: trichomes (the resin glands on cannabis flowers) contain virtually all of the plant's cannabinoids and terpenes; separating these from the relatively useless plant matter creates a more potent, refined cannabis product. Traditional hash production methods: (1) Charas — hand-rubbed hash from live cannabis plants, the technique used by Indian sadhus since pre-history; cannabis flowers are gently rubbed between palms, transferring sticky resin to the skin where it accumulates and is rolled into balls; produces extremely high-quality hash with unmatched terpene preservation; impossible to scale commercially. (2) Dry sift / kief — cured cannabis is sifted through fine mesh screens (74-220 micron), separating trichomes from plant matter through mechanical agitation; collected kief can be pressed into hash bricks; this is the basis of Moroccan and Lebanese hash production. (3) Ice water extraction (bubble hash) — cannabis is agitated in ice water inside fine mesh bags (25-220 micron); cold temperature makes trichomes brittle and easy to separate; collected resin is dried and pressed; produces the cleanest "full melt" hash that completely vaporizes when dabbed. Hash quality grades by full-melt rating: 6-star full melt (completely vaporizes leaving no residue, premium product), 5-star (mostly melts), 4-star and below (more plant contamination, lower grades suitable for hash rosin pressing). Modern hash distinctions: traditional pressed hash (compressed brick form, 35-55% THC), bubble hash (ice water hash in loose powder or pressed forms, 50-65% THC), commercial dry sift kief (loose powder, 25-50% THC). Hash consumption: smoking in pipes, joints, or spliffs (especially European spliff culture mixes hash with tobacco); dabbing the cleanest grades; pressing into rosin (the highest-yielding solventless concentrate input). Hash is the gateway between flower and modern concentrate culture, valued for its purity, traditional methods, and preservation of full-spectrum terpene profiles.
