Distillate

Distillate is the most refined and most controversial cannabis concentrate format, valued for its purity and dosing consistency but criticized for stripping away the entourage effect by removing terpenes and minor cannabinoids. Production: starting material (typically lower-grade cannabis trim or already-extracted crude oil) is processed through multiple refinement steps. (1) Initial extraction using hydrocarbon, ethanol, or CO2 to remove cannabinoids from plant material. (2) Winterization — the crude extract is dissolved in cold ethanol and chilled to -40°F, causing fats and waxes to precipitate out for filtration. (3) Decarboxylation — the extract is heated to convert THCA to THC. (4) Fractional distillation — the decarbed extract is heated under deep vacuum in a short-path or wiped-film distillation apparatus; different cannabinoids vaporize at slightly different temperatures and are separated into distinct fractions; THC distills around 320°F under proper vacuum. (5) Multiple distillation passes refine the product to 80-99% pure THC. The final distillate appears as a clear amber to golden viscous liquid with minimal odor and no characteristic cannabis flavor. Uses: (1) Vape cartridges — distillate is the dominant cartridge fill due to its consistent viscosity, high cannabinoid concentration, and ease of mixing with terpenes for flavor (most "flavored" cartridges add isolated terpenes back to distillate after extraction). (2) Edibles — precise dose control with no cannabis flavor; widely used in gummies, chocolates, beverages. (3) Tinctures — when blended with MCT oil or other carrier. (4) Topicals — emulsified into creams and balms for skin absorption. (5) Capsules — measured doses without any taste or smell. Controversy: by stripping terpenes and minor cannabinoids, distillate eliminates the entourage effect, producing flat one-dimensional psychoactive effects. Many consumers report distillate cartridges produce more anxiety than full-spectrum live resin or rosin cartridges at equivalent doses. Premium "live distillate" attempts to address this by adding back strain-specific terpene profiles after distillation, but the result is still less complex than original full-spectrum extracts.
