Triploid

Triploid cannabis represents the cutting edge of commercial seed production, offering yield and consistency advantages that standard diploid cannabis cannot match. Triploids are produced by crossing a tetraploid plant (4n, induced through colchicine treatment) with a standard diploid plant (2n) — the resulting offspring inherit two chromosome sets from the tetraploid parent and one set from the diploid parent, yielding 3n = 30 chromosomes per cell. This odd chromosome count makes triploids functionally sterile: they cannot produce viable pollen or seeds because chromosome pairing during meiosis fails. The agricultural benefits are significant: (1) all metabolic energy flows into flower production rather than seed production, increasing usable yield by 10-25%; (2) no risk of accidental pollination ruining a crop, since male triploids produce no fertile pollen and female triploids cannot be fertilized; (3) flowers are seedless even if pollinated, a critical advantage in outdoor and greenhouse environments where wild pollen can drift in; (4) trichome density and cannabinoid biosynthesis often exceed diploid parents due to elevated chromosome dosage. Commercial triploid cannabis was pioneered by Humboldt Seed Company's "All Gas OG" and "Triple Burger" releases in 2023, with Dark Heart Nursery and others following. Trade-offs include slower vegetative growth (3-7 days longer veg), reduced clone vigor in some strains, and the inability to use triploid plants for further breeding. Triploid seeds also carry premium pricing — typically 2-3x the cost of standard feminized seeds.
