Phenotype

Phenotype (literally "shown type") is the visible result of the interaction between a plant's genetic code (genotype) and its growing environment. Even from a single feminized seed pack with identical parent genetics, no two plants will be 100% identical — slight variations in seed maturity, root development, light exposure, nutrient uptake, and stress response cause each seedling to express its genes differently. In hybrid and polyhybrid strains, phenotype variation is even more dramatic because each seed inherits a unique combination of grandparent alleles. A pack of 10 Gelato seeds, for example, might produce: 3 phenotypes leaning toward the OG Kush grandparent (squat, fuel-terpene, dense bud), 3 leaning toward Sunset Sherbet (tall, sweet-creamy, looser bud), and 4 intermediate combinations. Pheno-hunting is the practice of growing many seeds, evaluating the resulting phenotypes, and selecting one or more standouts to clone for future production runs. Commercial flower brands often spend 6-12 months pheno-hunting a new strain before settling on "Cut #1" or "Cut #4" — the specific phenotypes worth taking to market. Environmental modifiers can dramatically shift phenotype expression: cold night temperatures bring out purple anthocyanin pigments; high UV light boosts trichome and terpene production; nutrient stress can shift terpene ratios; stress can trigger hermaphroditism. Understanding phenotype expression is essential for pheno-hunters, breeders, and commercial cultivators seeking consistency.
