Stabilization

Strain stabilization is the difference between a one-off cross that produces wildly variable plants and a finished commercial cultivar that growers can rely on. The process begins with an F1 cross showing desirable traits in some offspring. The breeder selects the best phenotypes from F1, breeds them together to make F2 (which segregates dramatically per Mendelian ratios), then continues to select and inbreed the closest matches to the target phenotype across F3, F4, F5, F6, and beyond. With each generation, more genes become homozygous (matching alleles from both parents), reducing variation and increasing the percentage of plants that express the target traits uniformly. By F6-F8, a properly stabilized strain should produce 95%+ "true to type" plants from seed — the threshold required for commercial release. Stabilization is enormously time-intensive: each generation requires 6-12 months of growing, evaluating, and breeding, meaning a fully stabilized cultivar can take 4-8 years to develop. This is why heritage seed banks like Sensi Seeds, Royal Queen Seeds, and Royal King Seeds invest heavily in their parent IBL libraries — a single stabilized parent line can be crossed with multiple partners to produce dozens of F1 hybrid releases without re-stabilization work. Inadequate stabilization is the most common reason commercial seed packs disappoint growers: if a "Gorilla Glue #4" pack produces 10 visibly different plants, the breeder shipped genetics that should have been worked for 2-3 more generations.
