IBL (Inbred Line)

IBL stands for "inbred line" — a cannabis cultivar that has been inbred through multiple generations of brother-sister or selfing crosses until the population becomes genetically homozygous at most loci. The result is a strain that "breeds true": plant 100 seeds and 95+ will grow into nearly identical plants with the same height, flowering time, terpene profile, and structure. Achieving IBL status typically requires 5-8 generations (F5-F8) of careful selection, with breeders culling any off-type plants and only breeding individuals that express the target phenotype. The most famous cannabis IBLs are landrace strains preserved by heritage breeders — Hindu Kush IBL, Acapulco Gold IBL, Durban Poison IBL — along with foundational hybrid IBLs like Skunk #1, Northern Lights #5, and Afghani #1. IBLs serve two critical functions in modern cannabis: (1) preservation of genetic heritage that would otherwise be lost as polyhybrid breeding dilutes original landrace traits, and (2) parent stock for commercial F1 hybrid production, since true F1 vigor requires both parents to be stable IBLs from genetically distinct backgrounds. The downside of inbreeding is reduced vigor — heavily inbred lines can show smaller plants, lower yields, and accumulated genetic defects (inbreeding depression). Skilled breeders manage this by occasionally outcrossing to introduce fresh genetic material before re-stabilizing.
