F1 Hybrid

F1 hybrids are the gold standard of commercial cannabis seed production because they combine genetic uniformity with maximum hybrid vigor. The classification comes from Mendelian genetics: P (parental) x P = F1, F1 x F1 = F2, and so on. To produce a true F1, both parent strains must be inbred lines (IBLs) — populations stabilized over 5-8 generations until 95%+ of seeds express identical traits. When two stable but genetically dissimilar IBLs are crossed, the resulting F1 seeds inherit one allele from each parent at every gene locus, producing maximum heterozygosity. The biological consequence is heterosis: F1 hybrids consistently outperform their parents in vigor, yield, disease resistance, and overall plant size — a phenomenon documented across all cultivated crops from corn to cannabis. F1 plants are also remarkably uniform, often growing to within 5-10% of each other in height and flowering time, which is critical for commercial sea-of-green operations. The trade-off is that F1 seeds cannot be saved — when F1 plants are bred together to produce F2 seeds, the genetics segregate according to Mendel's laws, producing wildly varied offspring including phenotypes that resemble grandparents rather than the F1 parent. This forces growers to repurchase F1 seeds each cycle, which is also why seed banks invest heavily in maintaining stable parent IBLs.
