Spliff

The spliff is a regional cannabis consumption format that varies dramatically by culture and country. In North American slang, "spliff" sometimes refers to any cannabis joint, but in proper usage and across most of the world, a spliff specifically means a joint mixed with tobacco. The format originated in Jamaican and Caribbean cannabis culture and spread globally through reggae, dub, and rastafarian movements. European cannabis culture (UK, Netherlands, Germany, France) is built almost entirely around spliffs — a cannabis-only joint is rare in European consumption. Construction: ground cannabis flower mixed with rolling tobacco (Drum, Amber Leaf, Pueblo, Manitou) in ratios from 90% cannabis / 10% tobacco for a mild tobacco accent up to 30% cannabis / 70% tobacco for tobacco-dominant joints; rolled in standard 1¼" or king-size papers with a crutch tip; lit and consumed like a regular joint. The motivations vary: economic — extending expensive cannabis with cheap tobacco; cultural tradition; effect modification (the nicotine produces an immediate head rush and stimulation that some users prefer alongside cannabis effects); slowing the burn rate; reducing total cannabis consumption per session. Health considerations: spliffs combine the risks of cannabis combustion with nicotine addiction and tobacco-specific carcinogens; multiple studies have identified spliff users as showing higher rates of cannabis use disorder due to the cannabis-tobacco synergy reinforcing addictive patterns; the European cannabis-tobacco co-consumption pattern correlates with significantly higher rates of cannabis dependence than the North American cannabis-only consumption pattern. Hash spliffs are a European specialty: hash is mixed with tobacco rather than flower, with the hash crumbled or warmed to softness before mixing. The legal cannabis movement in the United States has largely rejected the spliff format, with US dispensary pre-rolls and home rolling typically being cannabis-only.
