The blunt originated in 1980s Brooklyn hip-hop culture, when cannabis users began emptying small cigars (Phillies Blunts brand initially) and refilling them with cannabis. The format spread globally via hip-hop and reggae cultures and remains a defining cannabis consumption style in urban North America. Construction: (1) Wrap source — traditional blunts use Phillies, Dutch Masters, Backwoods, or Swisher Sweets cigars with the tobacco filler removed; modern alternatives include hemp-based blunt wraps (King Palm, Endo Wraps, Juicy Jay Hemp Wraps) that eliminate the tobacco component for users avoiding nicotine. (2) Cannabis filling — 1-3g of cannabis flower (much more than typical joints), broken up but not finely ground for proper airflow. (3) Optional crutch — some blunts include a glass tip or rolled cardboard filter, but traditional blunts skip the crutch. Rolling technique: split the cigar lengthwise with a fingernail or razor, remove the original tobacco, moisten the wrap with saliva for flexibility, distribute cannabis along the wrap, roll and seal with the natural adhesion of the moist tobacco leaf, run a flame along the wrap to seal the seam. Effects: blunts deliver more cannabis per session than joints due to higher capacity, but the combined cannabis + nicotine effect produces a different experience — the nicotine adds a mild head rush and increased heart rate that some users enjoy and others find unpleasant. Blunts burn 30-50% slower than joints due to the thicker wrap, making them ideal for sharing in groups (the original "puff puff pass" concept). Health considerations: traditional tobacco blunts add the nicotine addiction risk and tobacco carcinogens to the cannabis combustion products, making them the highest-risk smoking method; hemp blunt wraps eliminate the tobacco issue while preserving the format.
