Bowl

The bowl is the receptacle of any non-rolled cannabis smoking apparatus — pipes, bongs, bubblers — and the term doubles as both a noun for the chamber itself and a verb-noun for a single smoking session. Bowl materials: glass (most common, cleanest taste, breakable), metal (durable, alters taste), ceramic (good taste, fragile), wood (alters taste, requires breaking in), silicone (unbreakable, slightly affects taste at high temperatures), stone (rare, neutral taste, heavy). Bowl sizes: small "personal" bowls hold 0.1-0.2g for solo use; medium standard bowls hold 0.3-0.5g for 2-3 people; large "party" bowls hold 0.7g+ for groups. Loading technique: grind cannabis to medium consistency (not powder, which clogs airflow and not whole nugs which burn unevenly), load loosely in the bottom of the bowl with a tightly-packed cap on top to prevent ash through-pull, leaving room for airflow. Lighting and consumption: hold a flame slightly above the cannabis and inhale gently to draw the flame down (called "cornering" — lighting just one corner per hit so the bowl can be passed without consuming the entire load); pull through the mouthpiece while covering the carb (a small hole on the side of the pipe that controls airflow), then release the carb to clear the chamber of smoke. Bowls offer the most efficient flower-only smoking method — combustion of the entire bowl in a single session captures more cannabinoids than the same flower distributed across multiple joint hits. Bong bowls are typically 0.2-0.5g and pulled in a single hit; pipe bowls are typically loaded similarly but consumed across 3-8 individual hits. The common phrase "let's smoke a bowl" refers to a 2-5 person session consuming a single bowl loaded in a pipe or bong.
