SIP (Sub-Irrigated Planter)

SIP (Sub-Irrigated Planter) systems use capillary action and evaporation to maintain ideal moisture levels in the growing medium without daily intervention from the grower. Standard SIP construction: a 15-30 gallon container with a perforated platform or "false bottom" creating a 3-5 inch water reservoir at the base; a fill tube extending from the reservoir up through the soil to the top for refilling; an overflow drain to prevent over-filling; growing medium packed above the platform with a wicking element (cotton rope, perlite column) that draws water upward into the root zone. The plant's roots grow downward into the moisture gradient and self-regulate uptake — heavy feeders pull more water, light feeders pull less. The grower's job is simply to refill the reservoir every 5-10 days as it empties. SIPs paired with living soil create a "set it and forget it" cannabis cultivation system: organic amendments provide nutrition while the SIP provides moisture, requiring only weekly reservoir top-ups for the entire 12-16 week grow cycle. Benefits: dramatically reduced labor (no daily watering), eliminates over/underwatering mistakes (most common beginner failure), highly stable root zone moisture and pH, ideal for travel-prone or part-time growers, perfect pairing with no-till organic methods, lower water consumption than top-watering (no runoff waste). Trade-offs: SIPs require larger container sizes (15+ gallons minimum), initial setup is more complex than standard pots, salt buildup at the soil surface can occur over multiple cycles requiring occasional top-flushing, and reservoir water can develop algae or anaerobic conditions if neglected.
