Soil cultivation is the original and still-popular method for growing cannabis, valued for its simplicity, forgiveness, and superior terpene/flavor expression compared to hydroponic methods. Quality cannabis soil is far more than dirt — premium bagged mixes (Fox Farm Ocean Forest, Roots Organic, Pro-Mix HP) contain a base of peat moss or coco coir, perlite or pumice for aeration, composted bark, worm castings, fish bone meal, kelp meal, mycorrhizal fungi, and beneficial bacteria. The soil microbiome processes organic nutrients into plant-available forms gradually, providing a natural buffer that prevents the rapid nutrient burns and pH crashes possible in hydroponic systems. Soil parameters: pH 6.0-7.0 (wider tolerance than hydro thanks to organic buffering), water deeply when top 2cm of soil dries out (typically every 2-4 days depending on plant size and environment), feed with mild organic nutrients or rely on pre-amended super soils that need only water for the entire cycle. Yields are typically 20-30% lower than DWC or coco at equivalent skill level, but flavor and terpene complexity are universally rated higher — cannabis enthusiasts often pay premium prices specifically for "organic soil-grown" flower. Soil failure modes: overwatering causing root rot (most common beginner mistake), pH drift over multiple feeding cycles requiring eventual flushing, soil pests (fungus gnats, root aphids) more common than in hydro, and lower yield potential per square meter. Soil is ideal for: beginners learning basic plant care, low-budget setups, outdoor growing where soil performs naturally, and terpene-focused cultivators producing for connoisseur markets.
