Drip System

Drip irrigation is the dominant fertigation method in commercial cannabis cultivation, used in nearly all licensed indoor and greenhouse facilities for its precision, scalability, and labor efficiency. The system: a central reservoir holds pH/EC-balanced nutrient solution; a pump pressurizes the solution through main-line tubing; pressure-compensated emitters (drippers) at each plant deliver a precise volume of solution directly to the root zone on a programmed schedule; drainage trays collect runoff for measurement of EC and pH drift. Modern controllers (TrolMaster, Argus, AutoGrow) automate everything: scheduled multiple-times-daily feedings, automatic pH and EC adjustment of the reservoir, integration with environmental sensors to trigger feedings based on VPD or substrate moisture readings. Drip systems excel in coco coir and rockwool media where small frequent feedings (3-8 short waterings per day, totaling 15-25% runoff) optimize root zone oxygen, nutrient availability, and growth rate. Standard commercial cannabis fertigation: morning ramp-up with 3-5 short pulses building plant water content, midday maintenance feedings during peak photosynthesis, afternoon final feeding allowing dryback overnight. Benefits: precise nutrient and moisture control, dramatic labor reduction (one operator can manage 1000+ plants), integration with grow control automation, water efficiency through targeted delivery, suitability for vertical and tiered cultivation. Trade-offs: equipment cost (a small drip system runs $200-500, commercial systems run $20K-100K+), emitter clogging from precipitate buildup or organic residues, single-point-of-failure risk if the pump fails or the reservoir runs dry, and the requirement for stable city water or large source tanks.
