Organic cannabis cultivation rejects synthetic mineral fertilizers in favor of nutrient inputs derived entirely from natural sources: composted manures, fish meal, kelp meal, alfalfa meal, neem cake, worm castings, bat guano, rock phosphate, and similar materials. Rather than feeding the plant directly, organic systems feed the soil microbiome — bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and arthropods that break down organic matter into plant-available nutrients on a slow continuous schedule. The advantages: superior terpene expression (organic flowers consistently win cup competitions for flavor), no synthetic salt residues that affect taste even after curing, naturally balanced nutrient release prevents the stretches of deficiency or excess possible with synthetic regimens, and cannabis flowers from organic systems often show distinctive "shelf appeal" with more vibrant colors and frostier trichome coverage. Common organic methods: (1) Pre-amended "super soil" — a heavily fertilized base soil mixed with all needed amendments and aged 4-8 weeks before planting, requires only plain water for the entire cycle; (2) Living soil / no-till — perennial soil ecosystems in large containers (15+ gallons) maintained indefinitely with cover crops, mulch layers, and compost top-dressings; (3) Organic dry amendments — applying granular meals to the soil surface and watering them in throughout the cycle; (4) Compost teas — brewing aerated extracts of compost and kelp to apply as foliar sprays and root drenches. Trade-offs: organic systems require longer planning (super soil needs 4-8 weeks aging), produce 10-20% lower yields than synthetic hydro at equal skill level, and demand more patience as nutrient response is slower. The premium pricing on organic flower in legal markets typically offsets the yield trade-off for craft producers.
