Pipe

The cannabis pipe is the simplest and most portable smoking device, with designs that have changed little in centuries of use. The basic pipe construction: a bowl (combustion chamber) at one end where cannabis is loaded; a stem connecting the bowl to the mouthpiece; a mouthpiece at the opposite end for inhalation; optional carb hole on the side near the bowl that controls airflow (cover during inhalation, release to clear smoke from the chamber). Major pipe styles: (1) Spoon pipe — the most common modern design, named for its scoop-like bowl resembling a spoon; portable and easy to use; available in countless artistic designs in glass. (2) Sherlock pipe — extended curved stem creating a more sophisticated profile, named after the famous detective's pipe; cooler smoke due to longer stem. (3) Chillum — straight tube design with bowl at one end and mouthpiece at the other, no carb; the simplest pipe form, traditional in Indian cannabis culture (sadhus use chillums for ritual cannabis use). (4) Steamroller — large cylindrical pipe with bowl on top middle and open ends for high-volume hits with rapid clearing. (5) One-hitter / bat — small chillum-style pipe holding a single hit; popular for discretion and microdosing. (6) Bubbler — hybrid pipe with a small water chamber for partial filtration; bridges the gap between pipes and bongs. Materials: glass (best taste, most popular), wood (alters taste, requires seasoning), ceramic (good taste, breakable), metal (durable, affects taste), stone (heavy, neutral taste), corncob (traditional, alters taste). Loading and use: grind cannabis to medium consistency, pack the bowl loosely with a slightly tighter cap, light with a flame held above the cannabis while inhaling and covering the carb, release the carb to clear smoke. Pipes deliver 5-15mg of THC per hit, less than bongs but more controlled than joints. Maintenance: clean weekly with isopropyl alcohol and salt to remove resin buildup that affects taste and airflow.
