Hydro vs Soil

The hydroponics vs soil decision affects every aspect of cannabis cultivation: speed, yield, quality, cost, complexity, and forgiveness of mistakes. Hydroponics: any soilless system delivering nutrients directly to roots in dissolved form — DWC (deep water culture), RDWC (recirculating DWC), drip systems, ebb-and-flow, NFT, aeroponics, coco coir (technically soilless rather than fully hydro). Hydro advantages: faster vegetative growth (3-4 weeks veg vs 4-6 weeks soil), higher yields (200-500g per plant vs 150-350g soil), precise nutrient and pH control, no soil-borne pests (gnats, root aphids less common), excellent for vertical farming and commercial scaling, ability to fine-tune feeding to plant needs in real-time. Hydro disadvantages: equipment investment ($500-5000+ for a quality home system), constant monitoring required (pH/EC/temperature checked daily), system failures (pump failure, root rot, power outage) can kill entire crops within 24 hours, water temperature must stay below 70°F to prevent pythium, terpene complexity often rated lower than soil. Soil growing: traditional method using bagged potting mixes (Fox Farm Ocean Forest, Roots Organic) or amended garden soil. Soil advantages: forgiving moisture management (skipping a watering doesn't kill plants), natural pH buffering through organic matter, microbial diversity supports complex flavor development, lower equipment cost ($50-200 for basic gear), beginner-friendly with wide tolerance for mistakes, superior terpene expression in finished flower (cannabis enthusiasts often pay premium prices for "organic soil-grown" specifically for flavor). Soil disadvantages: slower growth (1-2 weeks longer total cycle), lower yields per plant, soil pests more common (fungus gnats), heavier and messier than hydro, less precise nutrient control. Many growers choose coco coir as a middle path — hybrid between soil and hydro that captures most hydro benefits with most soil forgiveness.
