DWC (Deep Water Culture)

DWC (Deep Water Culture) is the entry point into hydroponic cannabis growing for most beginners because of its simplicity, low cost, and dramatic results. The basic setup: a 5-gallon bucket or larger reservoir is filled with pH-balanced nutrient solution; a net pot containing the cannabis plant in a small amount of inert media (clay pebbles, rockwool) sits in a hole cut into the lid; the roots grow downward through the net pot and dangle directly into the nutrient solution; an air pump connected to a large air stone at the bottom of the bucket continuously bubbles air through the solution, oxygenating the water and providing the high dissolved oxygen levels (DO) that cannabis roots crave. Within 2-3 weeks roots fill the bucket with a thick white mass that absorbs water and nutrients with maximum efficiency. DWC results: vegetative growth 30-50% faster than soil, root mass 2-4x larger, yields commonly exceed 200-400g per plant under quality lighting. Critical maintenance: water temperature must stay below 70°F (21°C) — warm water holds less oxygen and breeds pythium root rot, often controlled with chillers or ice bottles; pH and EC must be checked daily and adjusted as the plant absorbs nutrients; reservoir water must be fully changed every 7-14 days to prevent salt buildup and microbial issues. RDWC (Recirculating DWC) connects multiple buckets to a central reservoir for easier large-scale management. Common DWC failure modes: power outage stopping the air pump (roots suffocate within hours), pythium root rot from warm dirty water, and pH crashes from stagnant solution.
