SOG (Sea of Green)

SOG (Sea of Green) is the opposite philosophy from SCROG: instead of training a few plants to fill a canopy, SOG packs many small plants into the same space, each contributing a single dominant cola. Standard SOG protocol: clone or germinate 9-25 plants per square meter, veg them for just 7-14 days under 18/6 light until they reach 15-25cm height, then immediately flip to 12/12 flowering. Each plant produces one main cola and minimal side branching, finishing in 6-8 weeks of flower for a total cycle of 8-10 weeks. Total canopy yield typically reaches 500-800g per square meter — competitive with SCROG yields but with significantly faster turnaround time. SOG advantages: (1) Faster harvest cycles allow 5-6 crops per year vs 3-4 for SCROG/topped plants, (2) Reduced training labor since no topping, LST, or screen tucking is needed, (3) Single-cola plants are easy to defoliate and trim at harvest, (4) Failure of one plant doesn't devastate the crop since canopy is distributed across many. Disadvantages: (1) Higher seed/clone costs since 9-25 plants are needed per square meter, (2) Requires consistent indica-leaning strains that don't stretch dramatically, (3) Less efficient use of vertical space, (4) Mother plant or constant cloning infrastructure is required for clone-based SOG, (5) Legal issues in jurisdictions with strict per-plant limits. SOG is the dominant method for commercial cannabis production in regulated markets where speed and labor efficiency matter more than per-plant yield optimization.
