Defoliation

Defoliation is one of the most debated techniques in cannabis cultivation — when done correctly it dramatically improves yield and bud quality, when done poorly it stresses plants into stunted growth or hermaphroditism. The technique involves selectively removing fan leaves (the large palmate leaves) that block light from reaching lower bud sites or trap humidity inside the canopy. Three primary defoliation strategies: (1) Light defoliation — remove only obviously shade-casting leaves throughout the cycle, ongoing maintenance. (2) Strategic defoliation — perform major leaf removal at two key transition points: 1-3 days before flipping to 12/12 (transition defoliation) and at day 21 of flowering (mid-flower defoliation). (3) Schwazzing — aggressive defoliation removing 60-80% of fan leaves at the day-21 mark; popularized by the book "Three a Light" and used commercially to push yields above 1g/watt. Key principles: never remove more than 30% of leaves in a single session, focus on leaves that are clearly shading bud sites or growing inward, leave smaller sun leaves attached at bud sites since they directly fuel bud growth, never defoliate during high heat or after watering when plants are already stressed, and never defoliate after week 4 of flowering. Plants typically recover within 3-5 days of major defoliation with visible vertical stretching as energy redirects to bud development. Defoliation is most beneficial in dense indoor canopies under intense LED lighting; outdoor plants in full sun benefit less from aggressive leaf removal.
