Aeroponics

Aeroponics is the most extreme form of hydroponic cultivation, dispensing with growing media entirely and suspending bare cannabis roots in air inside a sealed root chamber. Nutrient solution is delivered through high-pressure misters (low-pressure aeroponics, LPA) or ultrasonic foggers (high-pressure aeroponics, HPA) on a timed cycle — typically 5-30 seconds of mist every 1-5 minutes — keeping roots constantly moist with maximum oxygen exposure between cycles. The science: cannabis root metabolism is rate-limited by oxygen availability, not water or nutrients, so any growing method that delivers more oxygen to roots produces faster growth. Aeroponics achieves the highest possible oxygen-to-root ratio of any cultivation method, resulting in: vegetative growth rates 30-50% faster than soil, root mass development 2-3x denser than DWC, nutrient uptake efficiency near 100% (vs 30-50% in soil), and harvest cycles 1-2 weeks shorter end-to-end. The trade-offs are severe: misters and pumps are mechanical equipment subject to failure, and any 4-6 hour interruption causes catastrophic root death from desiccation. Aeroponic systems require: redundant pumps and timer backups, sealed root chambers to maintain humidity, sterile water and nutrient handling to prevent biofilm clogs in the misting nozzles, and constant root inspection for early signs of pythium (root rot). Commercial cannabis cultivators rarely use aeroponics due to the failure risk; the technique is more common in NASA-style high-tech research operations and in vertical farming for leafy greens. Home growers experimenting with aeroponics typically use small-scale single-bucket systems for clones and seedlings rather than full flower production.
