Fimming

Fimming originated as a happy accident — growers attempting to top their plants would sometimes cut too high, leaving partial tip tissue rather than a clean removal. The result was unexpectedly four new growth tips instead of the usual two, leading to the technique's humorous name "Fuck I Missed" (FIM). Today fimming is a deliberate technique used to multiply colas faster than topping while reducing recovery time. The technique: identify the apical tip during vegetative growth (week 3-5), pinch it with thumb and forefinger or use scissors to remove approximately 75% of the new growth — but leave the bottom 25% intact. The remaining tissue contains multiple meristematic growth points that respond by initiating 3-4 new branches instead of the 2 produced by clean topping. Recovery takes 24-48 hours (versus 3-5 days for topping) because the plant retains some of its apical tissue. Trade-offs vs topping: fimming is less precise — the actual number of new colas can vary from 2 to 4 depending on the cut, the resulting growth is less symmetrical, and the wound site can scar visibly. Topping produces cleaner more uniform results but takes longer to recover. Many growers combine the techniques, using topping for primary main colas and fimming on lateral branches to multiply mid-canopy growth. Both techniques are HST (high-stress training) and should only be performed during vegetative growth; fimming during flowering is strongly discouraged.
