CBG

CBG (cannabigerol) is the parent compound from which all other major cannabinoids derive — THC, CBD, CBC, CBN, and others all biosynthesize from CBGA (the acidic form of CBG) through specific enzymatic conversions during plant growth. By harvest time, only 1-3% of the plant's cannabinoid mass remains as CBG in standard strains, with the rest converted to other cannabinoids. This made CBG historically rare and expensive to extract. Recently, breeders have developed CBG-dominant strains (genetically modified to suppress the enzymes that convert CBGA to other compounds) including Jack Frost CBG, White CBG, and Stem Cell CBG, allowing commercial CBG isolate production. CBG mechanism of action: directly binds CB1 and CB2 receptors with low affinity (no intoxication), strongly modulates the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor (responsible for stress regulation), inhibits anandamide reuptake (similar to CBD), activates the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor at high doses. Documented and emerging therapeutic uses: appetite stimulation (more potent than THC at promoting eating in animal models), antibacterial activity (effective against MRSA in vitro studies), anti-inflammatory bowel disease activity, glaucoma intraocular pressure reduction, neuroprotection in Huntington's disease models, bladder dysfunction, and antitumor activity in colorectal cancer cell lines. CBG is non-psychoactive and produces no intoxication, making it suitable for daytime medical use. The hemp industry has rapidly adopted CBG: 2020 saw the first commercial CBG isolate release, and by 2024 CBG-infused tinctures, capsules, and topicals are widely available alongside CBD products. Pricing remains 3-5x higher than CBD due to lower yields per acre. CBG research is in early stages but considered the most promising emerging cannabinoid for therapeutic development.
